Every year, NFL Sunday Ticket blows fans away with one of football’s most consistently beloved digital products. I was part of the small team of designers who worked directly with the amazing team at Sony to revamp the PlayStation 4 version of NFL Sunday Ticket for 2018.

The screen shows the score, quarter, time, video highlights, and stats with options to watch the game, add the game to a queue, view highlights, or go back. Designing for gaming consoles entails many unique and exciting challenges, as design decisions are no longer limited to touch screen behaviors. Every screen-based interaction requires controller input, so it was imperative to be equally sensitive to the physical and digital aspects of our product throughout our process. Researching common behaviors for controller interactions was essential, and led to design decisions that felt most natural and comfortable for PlayStation users.

Each tile shows the teams in the game, the score, the quarter, the time, and alerts for events like just-scored touchdowns. PlayStation users expect highly dynamic-yet-intuitive experiences that mirror their gaming experiences, so everything from watching video and navigating through menus to researching players and teams needed to be fluid and richly interactive. NFL Sunday Ticket is available for iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire Stick, and more; so it was important to maintain the product’s cohesive design system while creating special features for PlayStation’s unique, more-capable platform.

Users can play and pause each game, and select which game gets the primary audio feed. UX rules show how the picture-in-picture video player lets users watch two games at once, and how the player moves out of the way when Game Chips and other important on-screen menus are visible.
